Thematic analysis of names in Kamus-ı Türk (A-K)

Kâmûs-ı Türkî is one of the most important Turkish dictionaries written and published by Şemsettin Sami in 1901. This work, which sheds light on the understanding of lexicography not only in its time but also today, continues to be a source for many dictionaries prepared today and scientific studies thanks to its rich vocabulary, etymological explanations and the importance it gives to the public language. Kâmûs-ı Türkî contains 29,085 entries. These entries are words belonging to various conceptual areas. The entries, which are mixed in terms of conceptual area, were examined by separating them according to their themes in this study. In this context, the vocabulary in Kâmûs-ı Türkî was examined in the context of a thematic dictionary. Within the scope of the study, the entries between the letters A-K in Kâmûs-ı Türkî were examined and the noun-origin words in this section were systematically identified. The identified words were classified according to their conceptual areas. Thus, the noun words in Kâmûs-ı Türkî were evaluated with a thematic approach. Inferences were made based on their origins, meanings and areas of use. While various studies on Kâmûs-ı Türkî were encountered in the literature review, no comprehensive study was reached in which the work was handled with a thematic method. In this context, our research aims to both fill this gap and shed light on the conceptual world of Turkish through the words in the dictionary. In the context of dictionary studies, which have increased today, this research aims to contribute to the analyses to be made on the functional changes, semantic shifts and conceptual areas of words in the historical process in word comparisons in different dictionaries. The purpose, importance, limits, problems and method of the research are mentioned in the introduction section. In the second section, the subject was approached from a conceptual framework and the entries in the work were classified under the titles of kinship names, accessory names, military term names, plant names, religious term names, literary term names, food names, clothing names, animal names, names of human body and internal organs, fabric-weaving names, profession names, music term names, game names and color names. In the conclusion section, the findings and evaluations of the research were made. The study was completed with the bibliography of the works used during the research. In the thesis study titled "Analysis of Names in Kamus-i Turki in the Context of Thematic Dictionary", many words were evaluated under more than one thematic title due to the richness of the meaning diversity of the words. This situation clearly reveals the depth and richness of meaning of Turkish. In addition, the explanations of loanwords that have entered our language from foreign languages such as Arabic, Persian, French and English should also include the Turkish equivalents of these words; It shows the importance that Şemseddin Sami gave to Turkish and how rich the Turkish vocabulary is. Kâmûs-ı Türkî is accepted as one of the basic reference sources for etymological studies in terms of showing not only the meanings of words but also their origins. Therefore, Kâmûs-ı Türkî is a guiding and pioneering source for dictionary studies carried out today.
