The concept of political boundary in art in the public space

Public space is essentially that which is accessible to everyone. It marks the common, outside the private sphere. While the term "public" describes that it belongs to the people, it also signals that there is a state in the middle. While these areas are protected by various laws, they are intended to serve and benefit the public. Public spaces provide acculturation. And the art activities that take place in these areas are among the elements that enrich culture. It brings art to the public without requiring a special effort. An example of a public space that meets the concepts of state and common space is political borders. States have territories that serve various purposes due to economic, political, military, administrative and historical factors. These political regions are countries represented by flags. The relationship dynamic between countries has an impact on the physical border between them. Within the scope of the thesis, six samples of artworks made in political border regions, which are considered public spaces, were selected. The relationship between the technical structure of the artworks and the region of the political border is analyzed. Six different political borders: Ukraine-Poland, United States-Mexico, Israel-Palestine, South Korea-North Korea, East Germany-West Germany and Spain-Morocco, and the artists who produced artworks are Joroslaw Koziara, Richard Lou, JR, EL-SEED, Keith Haring and BLU. The works are technically diverse: Land Art, Installation, Mural, Photography. Political borders with the status of military zones are evaluated in the context of art in public space. In the first part of the thesis, while defining public space and conceptual art, political borders as a public space are introduced by establishing their relationship with conceptual art. Contrary to the conventional definition of public space, political borders are spaces where art is conceptualized. In the second chapter, the works, the formation of political borders and the impact of their current existence on the work and the artist are analyzed. In the third chapter, personal practice studies are included within the scope of the thesis. There are works produced in different disciplines on the concept of political borders. As a result, analyses have been reached between borders and works in the technical and aesthetic context. Today, the finding that there are groups of artists who react to various political borders with art has been one of the greatest achievements of the thesis. For the thesis, library resources, internet resources, various articles, theses and artist work reviews were utilized.
