Abstract (EN)

Immigration plays an important role in the socio-economic state of the host countries. Increasing income inequality as a result of high immigration flows in the globalization process has started to pose a major problem for both developed and developing countries. Canada is famous for having multiple admission programs in immigrant selection/placement and stands out from other countries with its high immigration demand. On the one hand, Canada has a high immigration demand, on the other hand, immigrants from different parts of the globe want to immigrate to Canada. This high immigration demand raises the question of whether immigrants have negative economic impacts. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between immigration and income inequality for Canadian provinces. In this study, the effect of immigrants from different source regions and the effects of current immigrant selection regulations that were put into effect in 2002 on income inequality are investigated as well. For this purpose, five different models have been estimated using panel data analysis model and fixed effects regression estimation method for the period 1994-2017. According to the empirical results, immigration has a positive effect on reducing income inequality across Canadian provinces. Additionally, this positive effect can be observed even before the regulations about the admission of immigrants that were put into effect in 2002. Finally, when immigrants are grouped according to their source regions, it is observed that they do not have particular effects on income inequality in Canadian provinces.
