The Effects of Cytotoxic Chemotherapy on Blood Pressure and Cytokines in Hypertensive Patients Diagnosed with CancerAim: Although hypertension and cancer are two independent diseases, they seems to have certain points in common etiopathogenesis. The development of new blood vessels from existing blood vessels, which means a role in angiogenesis is the formation of both diseases. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of cytotoxic treatment on blood pressure and its influence on cytokines in newly diagnosed cancer patients.Methods: Cancer diagnosed 68 patients and 18 control subjects were studied. Serum samples of patients measured for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), nitric oxide (NO), endothelin (ET) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) levels with micro ELİSA metod and serum biochemical parameters were evaluated, respectively. During the treatment periods of patients weekly systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured. The results were evaluated in biostatistics laboratory.Results: Between patients and control group, we did not find a significant difference between VEGF, NO, ET and ACE levels (p = 0.150, p = 0.083, p = 0.628). We found the significant differences between systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressures measured before treatment and after treatment in patients (p = 0.000, p = 0.000). We observed significant differences between patients and control groups in free T4, calcium CRP, BUN, Cr, BMI and urine methanephrin, normethanephrin, ephinephrin and dopamine levels (p=0.009, p=0.011, p=0.027, p=0.001, p=0.001, p=0.006, p=0.000, p=0.004, p=0.004, p=0.000).Conclussion: Impaired angiogenesis or tumorogenesis play an important role in the pathogenesis of cancer. In recent years, the studies for targeted therapy have been corrupted and focused on angiogenesis and angiogenesis mediators. We did not determine a significant difference between pre-treatment VEGF, ET, ACE levels, but we found the significantly difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure looked up at pre-treatment and treatment duration, respectively. We came to a conclusion that patients with HT treated for cancer need close blood pressure monitoring. To explain the decrease in blood pressure values, cytokines values may have measure on inspection before and after cytotoxic therapy with changes in blood pressure along with broad participation and to assess further studies needed.Key Words: Blood Pressure, Cancer, Angiogenesis, VEGF, NO, ET, ACE
