Maqam and performance analysis of Kanunî Artaki Candan's life, musicianship and three taqsims in different maqams

In this research, modal and performance analysis of the taqsims performed in different maqams by Artaki Candan, one of the leading qanun performers of Turkish music, was made. Qualitative, quantitative and survey models were used in the preparation of the thesis. Artaki Candan's agility in plectrum usage technique and trill decorations while performing the zither were also examined and the taqsims were analyzed. It is heard that Candan uses techniques suitable for the Qanun instrument, such as flick, sweep, grupetto, multiplication, glissando, trill and puller, in her taqsims, with a unique performance. In the taqsims he made, first the works were notated, their maqam analysis was made, and finally the technical performance analysis was carried out. Artaki Candan's taqsim performances with the Kanun in different modes were notated and musically analyzed. In this research, the taqsims made by Artaki Candan in three maqams (Ferahnak, Hicaz, and Nihavend) were examined. In the study, firstly, general information about music, makam, taqsim, taqsim types and taqsim analysis is given. This information will contribute to understanding the content of the thesis. In the 2nd chapter, information such as Artaki Candan's life, art, music circle, teacher and students are included. In Chapter 3, three different divisions of Artaki Candan, which are technically difficult to perform, are discussed. These divisions are in Ferahnak, Hicaz and Nihavend makams. The definitions of these maqams were made first. Then, by making a maqam analysis of the taqsims, Artaki Candan's maqam understanding and maqam theoretical knowledge were revealed. Then, the technical execution of Taqsims was examined and the ornamentation techniques used in Taqsims were written down. With this study, both Artaki Candan's maqam knowledge and performance techniques have been written down, and it is aimed to contribute to the research of music and especially qanun performers. In addition to the study, a QR code was created for the recordings of the taqsims on social media and added to the notes. In this way, it was ensured that the divisions were heard. Our study will contribute to law researchers.
