Evaluation of anxiety and depression of the nurses working in closed environment

Abstract (EN)

This study has been planned to evaluate the anxiety and depression of nurses who work in closed environments and was conducted between February 2013 and March 2013 based on permits recieved from a private hospital group in Istanbul. Research subjects were made up of nurses who work in closed enviroment. The whole group was taken into consideration and 120 usable questionnaire forms were obtained. Data was collected by using HAD scale in accordance to the literature. The analysis of the data was done by the SPSS for windows 2.10 programme. The data were evaluated by using descriptive statistical methods (frequency, percentage, mean standard deviation, chi square test, t test and fischer test). P value less than 0.05 was found statistically significant. The results revealed that 60% of nurses are graduated from university, 70,8% of them are single, 77,5% of them dont have children. 49,2% of the once who work in closed enviorement work in operating theaters, 82,5% of them admit it was their choice to be in there, 56,7% of them are partially satisfied and 46,7% of them stated that their dissatisfaction derives from economical difficulties. Nurses who are responsible for their family members have anxiety symptoms . It was found that anxiety decreases as the length of work time increases, so there is an indirect correlation between the length of work time in the job and anxiety score. Those nurses who have emotional attachement to their relationships with their workmates have anxiety. Reasons lead to anxiety and depression are found 46,7% sudden and unexpected death, 62,5% relationships with workmate, 62,5% nurse-doctor relationships, 65% working in closed enviroment and 53,3% job description (role) ambiquity and conflicts Key words: Nursing, Anxiety, Depression, Intensive care
