Abstract (EN)
In recent years, rate of inclusion of qualified women labor in business life is progressively increasing. However, it is understood from the results of surveys conducted in Turkey and worldwide, that women are not adequately employed at senior management levels, they are rather employed at lower level management positions. It is a known fact that women are faced with several impediments in reaching their career targets. As a requirement of the roles imposed for men and women under the patriarchal social structure, in communities it is avoided to have women at positions requiring powerful leadership attire. And since senior management likewise necessitates powerful leadership, the belief held that women could not be successful on grounds of arguments like women ascribing more essence to social relations and being emotional, have constituted ages long judgments of social communities. It is a known fact that even at our present times, the opinion that senior management positions are ascribable to men is quite widespread. In this study, it is inquired the glass ceiling syndrome, a concept originating from sexual discrimination, generally used to express the career impediments mainly women managers are faced with. The application stage of the study is conducted and carried out on both men and women managers working in the public communication sector (PTT) in Istanbul Province. The survey comprises of a screening model and a quantitative portrayal study. Within scope of this survey, 50 questions are posed to 182 managers, comprising of 66 women and 116 men, employed under PTT in order to measure their perceptions pertaining to glass ceiling syndrome, and in analysis of the data obtained, SPSS-21 statistics program is used. It is concluded that such impediments specified as glass ceiling impediments, like "multiple role undertaking, personal preferences and perceptions, professional discrimination, gender based cliché judgments (prejudices), queen bee syndrome, organizational culture, failing to take part in communication networks and lack of mentor-role model" are having a substantial impact on women managers employed by PTT.
