Investigation of antioxidant activity and cytotoxic properties of some Hypericum L. taxa naturally distributed on Ida mountain

In this study, the antioxidant activities of methanol extracts that have been obtained from above-ground structures (leaves, flowers, stems) of Hypericum perforatum L., Hypericum kazdaghensis Gemici&Leblebici, Hypericum calycinum L., Hypericum perfoliatum L., Hypericum tetrapterum Fries., Hypericum olympicum L., Hypericum montbretii Spach. taxa which are naturally distributed in Ida (Çanakkale-Balıkesir) Mountain haven been investigated through DPPH method and their cytotoxic effects have been determined by means of WST-1 (colorimetric) in L929 mouse fibroblast cell lineages. According to the results, it has been found out that antioxidant activities of the taxa that have been analyzed differ in terms of organ and dose from which extracts have been gained. It has also been identified that H. perforatum taxon had a higher value than other taxa and H. calycinum, H. kazdaghensis, H. tetrapterum and H. triquetrifolium had values closer to that of H. perforatum taxon. According to the data that have been obtained in relation with the type of organ, methanol extracts of the leaves had higher values than those of flowers and stem extracts. According to the data obtained in terms of cytotoxic effect, all taxa studied on L929 mouse fibroblast cells showed high cytotoxic effect at various dilutions.Keywords: Hypericum L., DPPH, Antioxidant activity, Cytotoxic effect, L929 mouse fibroblast cell line
