Abstract (EN)

The required energy, which is essential in meeting the needs of mankind and in sustainable growth, is especially utilized in sectors such as industry, residence heating and transportation. Energy is the most important factor that increases the quality of life and the economic and social progress. In the large-capacity coal burning thermic power plants which were set up to meet this energy demand, low-calori lignite coal with high ash content, which cannot be evaluated in other sectors of industry, is widely used. In the 70?s, in order to increase the production of thermic power plants, the application of novel techniques increased the opportunity of assessment of low-quality coal. However, as a result of combustion, gas and dust emmisions due to low-quality lignite and large amounts of solid waste (fly ash, bottom ash, slag and flue gas) occurred. In regards to the use of coal in thermic power plants, the elementary composition of the coal ash is the most crucial factor that affects the slag formation mechanism and the ratio of slagging within the furnace. The early detection of the properties of the coal that will be combusted at the thermic power plants is very important for the protection of problems. The slagging problem encountered at Yeniköy Power Plant (2x210) and at Kemerköy Power Plant (3x210) operating with low-calori lignite coal causes a lot of problems. Coal, ash and slag samples were taken from these thermic power plants in order to be studied in this thesis. The chemical and mineralogical analyses were conducted on the coal, ash and slag samples that were compiled from the mentioned power plants and the chemical and mineralogical relationship between the used coal and the formed slag was determined and several solutions were suggested. This thesis anticipates to contribute to the solution of the problems encountered at the two biggest coal-based thermic power plants of Turkey and also to form a reference for the other similar thermic power plants.
