Town squares: A study on Adana 5 Ocak Square

Squares that are kinds of municipal places have been an important component of city life since the emerging of the cities to present with their different functions and shapes. People have gotten together and social culture has had the chance to express itself. Squares have had different kinds of characters in time according to the geography and socio-cultural structure in which they present. In this study, first of all, the term ?squares? was explained with discussing the physical, cultural and social factors that have an effect on the shape and the formation of the squares. It was aimed to obtain common data by examining squares that were chosen from the different countries of the world under the light of this information. The spatial characteristics of 5 Ocak Square which was the working area were evaluated comparatively with the selected squares.
