Survey of Haliç region in the context of urban image

The subject of this project, named ?Survey of Haliç Region in the context of Urban Image? is in order to study elements of urban images on urban spaces which are studied in aspect of urban design and environmental psychology. The aim of the study is to examine the elements of urban image which is the most affected place by local and global changes. In the survey it?s aimed in order to distact attention of the elements of urban image having a great important concept on traditional residance and newly developing places. Through the elements of urban image that plays a significant role on occuring urban identity, cities which are percieved phsically and socio-psycologically appears, so cities have a sense of percievable and acceptable environmental psychology. The change which was lived along the history and which has been lived nowadays and uncontroled increase of population, urban spaces developing without checking, unsuitable construction ignoring historical buildings has spoilt the relationship between people and urban areas. İstanbul which is the one of most the places affected by the urban change and development. That İstanbul has geographic and historical features together make İstanbul specified and qualified city. Haliç Region is an important subregion in İstanbul Metropolitan Area with its cultural and natural characteristics. Its cultural, historical and social values and its nature provide Haliç a special identity. Being one of the oldest residence, existance of many elements of urban image in this area has played a great role on chosing of Haliç as a subject of this thesis. That the projects and the practises which had been made so far didn?t handle the subregion totally and that the subject which constructions users didn?t comrehend the region did not take place of the surveys are thought as a lack of nessecity to be dealt with. Projects carried out partially bring partial solution. Projects like cleaning Haliç, turning historical and industrial constructions into cultural complex can make Haliç understandable physically, additionally, can give a chance to Haliç in order to change lovely place socio-pyschologically. This thesis which examines elements of urban image in concept of urban design and environmental psychology through all sides of Haliç Region includes originality because there has been no other study done before like this subject. On the survey how users see the region was tested with questionare and mental map, so there is a survey carried out which users are taken into account. The target, extent and methods of survey are explained in the introduction of survey having five sections. The second section containing the topic therotical frame is allocated to notional examination. In this section, firstly, the notions of environment and place which are continously changed by people, the most important element of urban environment are studied. The fact of urban image which is effective on getting accostummed of cities is studied in term of not only visuality but also perceptablity by users and identity of urban. Because of that in that section, urban identity and image are searched. The basic theoritical thesis about urban image ?Mental Map Theory? and ?Urban Image Theory? are examined throughout the thesis. In third section, location and historical process of Haliç, which is choosen as sample, has been examined. At the end of the section, the image elements of Haliç Region are evaluated by the view of urban planner from the context of ?Urban Image Theory?. The subject which Haliç Region is percieved by users is investigated in the forth section of study. The image elements of the region and urban identity were tested by residents, workers and visitors in this area. Very important datas are obtained at the end of the questionarre. In the section of result and evaluation, the notional sections and other development sections have been obtained from this study. Urban image notion is a significant subject from the view of urban design on settlements or the adaptation of traditional settlements to up-to-date situations. Instead of unquasified or unidentified places, places which are percieved physically, enjoyed and accepted sociopsycologically make the relation between users and city much stronger. To create new residance for our time needs must be the basic target for protecting urban image and supporting urban identity. By the enlightening of these ideas, the survey of Haliç Region as a subject of this thesis is thought as a subtitle for the next surveys. The shores, slopes, valleys, rivers and basins of Haliç are examined so that it can be source for every kinds of survey about this subject. It?s necessary to produce new solutions for Haliç Region where processes and changes steadily with different dynamics and studies must be done by supporting absulate participation. Because of the fact that how users percieve the region was examined and the region was researched not only physically but also socio-psycologically multifeatured and unique survey is obtained.
