A research on measuring the spatial quality of square as urban space: Malatya New Mosque Square

In recent years, significant studies have been carried out on the changes in architecture and urbanism practices, scientific researches, new urbanism models and the livelihood level in cities, raising living standards and increasing the quality of urban space. One of these studies focuses on the squares that are part of the urban space. The squares are places where daily life passes, where social and social relations develop, communication between people increases, and urban focus is formed. The physical and social characteristics of the squares affect the quality of life of the users and in this respect, the concept of quality stands out. The New Mosque Square, which is the subject of this study, is described as a place defining Malatya city center in public memory, a focus on public transportation, a place where user-space interaction is most intense, an area where functional activities are performed, and the city center in terms of its location and scale. it is. It has been observed that New Mosque Square is used and preferred by the people living in the city with reference to the physical, social and psychological effects produced, but the spatial quality of the area itself has not been measured. From this point of view, the history, location, physical and functional characteristics of the square were investigated and observations and interviews were made in the square. In the SPSS 25 program, the results of anket 'functional, aesthetic, construction and maintenance service quality parameters proposed by İnceoğlu (2007) on the measurement of spatial quality were obtained. The quality of the square was measured by interpreting with the data obtained and the results of the survey, the strengths or deficiencies were revealed and new suggestions were made on the deficiencies.
