Investigation of urban design projects: "Aksaray Piri Mehmet paşa bazaar"

The city which has a soul, living and complex dynamic system is a settlement with no identification limit. As a result of the rapid population growth, developing technological factors, natural disasters, globalization, social, economic and cultural changes, increasing needs and changing expectations, the city becomes weary, obsolete and outdated due to its living structure. Especially since the 19th century, as a result of the effects of industrialization, urban changes increased and the city needed external intervention. This situation led to the fact of urban transformation based on urban design principles and standards. Renewal and transformation activities in urban environments, which are widely on the agenda of today, aim to respond to the needs of the user, produce permanent and sustainable solutions to the urban problems, prevent unnecessary urban sprawl, physical, environmental, social, economic and cultural development at the urban scale. In order to achieve successful results for this purpose, urban environments requiring intervention should be evaluated as a whole, the rehabilitation process should be managed in a planned way with its participants. Widespread application of incoherent works in the urban environments in our country, ignoring the human-environment relationship, and not participating in the project process in a democratic way affect the whole city negatively. In this framework, urban design practices that shape the urban planning and transformation process gain importance in the formation of sustainable, higher quality, healthy and livable cities by evaluating the urban environments that require intervention in many dimensions. Within the scope of the thesis, the abovementioned ones have been evaluated extensively and it has been determined that the fiction between urban transformation and urban design is leading and guiding. In this context, examining the history of urban transformation and urban design concepts and information in accordance with the limits and examples in the world and Turkey were transferred. Piri Mehmet Paşa Project, which was applied as a result of urban transformation of Aksaray Old Terminal Structure, which is the study area of the thesis, is examined; The main purpose of the study is to examine the project in the context of urban design principles, to evaluate the proposal works in the project process, to determine the positive and negative results of the transformation, to evaluate the roles, partnerships and participation of the project actors. The information related to the field and the current situation were conveyed through a questionnaire consisting of questions determined by the phenomenological analysis type. Participation of the project actors to the process, user satisfaction and functionality of the area were analyzed with the survey method. As a result, in the thesis study, the urban transformation project of Aksaray Piri Mehmet Paşa Çarşısı is tried to be explained within the context of urban design principles. Proposal for solutions for future applications are introduced.
