Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque tiles

The present study aims to examine and document the patterns, and colors and composition characteristics of the tiles of the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque in İstanbul Province in order to create source material to leave them to the next generations. The present study is a descriptive study based on field research. The population of the present study is the Ottoman tile decorations of the 16th century. The sample of the present study is the 49 tiles in the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.In the present study, the written sources about the Turkish Tile Art have been researched and several libraries were scanned for literature on the subject matter. A visit was made to Istanbul and the locations of the tiles in the Kılıç Ali Paşa were identified, and they were measured and photographed. Then, the patterns of the tiles were drawn and they were used as a material for the present study. The different pattern and composition samples of the tiles examined were recorded in observation forms separately.The present study consists of 5 parts and 213 pages. In the first part, the problem of the present study is discussed and its purpose, importance, constraints are explained and the definitions used in the study are included. In the second part, the definition, history and areas of use of the Turkish Tile Art, as well as the tools and equipment used, patterns, techniques and tile-production stages are discussed in detail. Moreover, information about Istanbul, Architect Sinan and Kılıç Ali Paşa is provided. In the third part, the population and the sample of the present study are provided in numeric data. Data collection and analysis are described in detail parallel to the process followed during the study.For findings and comments section, the features of chinas in mosques were recorded into observation forms, and their photographs and drawings were included. It was concluded that the most commoly used colours in these chinas, which are studied as 49 pieces, were cobalt, white and red, and that the most commonly used motifs were floral motifs. In fifth and final section, all findings and results were summarized and suggestions were included.
