Evaluation of the effect of training given to patients diagnosed with COPD using the Role-Play method on their medication compliance

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of education given to patients with COPD using the role-play method on their medication compliance. The study was carried out in a pre-test-intervention-post-test design for patients hospitalized in the chest disease wards of a training and research hospital in Ankara after the preparation of the educational content to be applied as an intervention. The study was finalized with 44 patients. Data were collected using the "Patient Identification Form", "Medical Adherence Report Scale" and "Dyspnea-12 Scale". The intervention was applied to the patients who were pretested with the Patient Recognition Form and the scales. After the educational intervention was applied with the role-play method, post-tests were applied 5-7 days later, and the effectiveness of the intervention was monitored. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The majority of the individuals participating in the study were between 56-65 years old and male. 45.5% of the participants were diagnosed with COPD one year ago, and 50% were in the second stage of the disease. As the number of COPD exacerbations increased, the scores on the Dyspnea-12 Scale also increased (p<0.01). The physical conditions of the individuals affected their scores on the Medical Adherence Report Scale (p<0.01). There is a significant difference between the pre- test and post-test scores of the participants in both the Dyspnea-12 Scale and the Medical Adherence Report Scale at the 99% confidence interval p<0.01 After the intervention in the study, the mean scores of the patients on the Dipne-12 Scale decreased, and the mean scores on the Medical Adherence Report Scale increased.
