Investigation the effect of family support program based on facilitated sensemaking theory on the feeling of entrapment and anxiety level of patient families in intensive care unit

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of family support program based on facilitated sensemaking theory on the feeling of entrapment and anxiety level of patient families in intensive care unit. Method: This randomized controlled, single blind, experimental study was conducted with 16 intervention and 14 control groups, a total of 30 patient family in the Akdeniz University Hospital Anesthesia Intensive Care Unit I, II ve III. Personal information form, Entrapment Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Visual Analog Scale were used to collect the data. All statistical analyzes were made SAS 9.4 package program. Descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test, and Signed Rank Test that one of the non-parametric dependent group (paired) comparison tests were applied in the statistical evaluation. Results: According to the pre-test measurement of the patient families who were applied family support program based on facilitated sensemaking theory decreased state anxiety (S=68, p=0.0001), internal entrapment (S=18, p=0.0078) and external entrapment (S=39, p=0.0005) levels in the post-test measurement. These findings are statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the family support program compliance of facilitated sensemaking theory were positively affected the state trait anxiety internal entrapment and external entrapment scores of family members of patients hospitalized in intensive care unit.
