Evaluation of colonoscopic procedures based on international standards

Colorectal cancers are the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Colonoscopy is the most important screening method for the detection of colorectal cancers and international standards have been established to increase the effectiveness of colonoscopy. In our study, we aimed to examine the quality criteria based on international standards colonoscopy performed at the of Fırat University Hospital Gastroenterology Clinic Endoscopy Unit between August 2015 and January 2019. In our study, colonoscopies performed between August 2015 and January 2019 at Fırat University Hospital Gastroenterology Clinic, Endoscopy Unit were evaluated retrospectively by taking international colonoscopy procedure markers into consideration. 2805 of 5192 patients who underwent colonoscopy in the last 3 years were included in the study. 2655 of the patients were operated before November 2018 and 150 patients were operated between November 201-January 2019. Chi-Square Test was used to compare categorical data. Mann-Whitney U Test was used to compare quantitative data. In our study, adenoma detection rate was 26.4% in women and 36% in men between August 2015 and October 2018. Between November 2018 and January 2019, this rate was 27.5% for women and 43% for men. The cecum intubation rate was 82% between August 2015 and October 2018 and 84.4% between November 2018 and January 2019. Sedation was performed at 91.4% between August 2015 and October 2018 and this rate was 98% between November 2018 and January 2019. Colonoscopy withdrawal time was recorded in the colonoscopies performed between November 2018 and January 2019 and the mean withdrawal time was 13.6 minutes. As a result; It was determined that colonoscopy performed in the Fırat University Hospital Gastroenterology Clinic Endoscopy Unit did not meet all the parameters of international quality criteria and compliance with international quality criteria should be increased in order to perform more effective colonoscopy procedures.
