Evaluation of complications after congenital cataract surgery

In this study, 136 eyes of 101 patients in 3 different groups were analyzed according to age retrospectively. Group 1 (<24 months), in 56 eyes; lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy were performed, the intraoculer lens was not implanted. Group 2 (24-96months), in 65 eyes, lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy were performed and Acrysof MA60BM in 22 eyes, Sensar 40e in 17 eyes and Eyecryl 600 in 26 eyes were implanted. Group 3 (97-192months), in 15 eyes; lensectomy was performed and Acrysof MA60BM in 2 eyes, Sensar 40e in 9 eyes and Eyecryl 600 in 4 eyes were implanted. Postoperatively, the most common complication was posterior capsulotomy edge fibrosis 29 (%51.8) eyes in group 1 and 33 (%50.8) eyes in group 2, respectively. In group 3, the most common complication was posterior capsule opacification (4 (%26) eyes). In group 2, 10 (%45.5) Acrysof MA60BM, 7 (%41.2) Sensar 40e and 16 (%61.5) Eyecryl 600 implanted eyes had posterior capsulotomy edge fibrosis. Relationship between intraoculer lens type and this complication was not statistically significant. In group 3, the posterior capsule opacification was not observed in Acrysof MA60BM implanted eyes, underwent Sensar 40e in 1 (%11.1) and Eyecryl 600 in 3 (%75) eyes had posterior capsule opacification. Relationship between intraoculer lens type and this complication was statistically significant in group 3.The cases, were examined for excessive fibrin formation, secondary glaucoma, anterior synechiae and pupillary irregularity. These complications were seen less often with increasing age. Anterior synechiae was seen statistically significant higher in group 1 than other two groups. Precipitates on intraoculer lens and decentration of lens were observed more common in group 2 than group 3. Endophthalmitis 1 in group1, cortex fragments 1 in group 2 and 4 in group 3, retinal detachment 1 in group 1 were observed.Underwent surgery means decreasing the inflammatory response with increasing age, especially in reducing the complications of anterior segment. Emerging technology and surgical techniques, intraoculer lenses has become increasingly preferred by the surgeons, but at an early age increases the inflammatory response of the intraoculer lens application, especially in anterior chamber caused an increase in the incidence of complications are observed in this study. Intraoculer lenses should be preferred for the congenital cataract surgery is still wide, further long-term follow up studies are needed and more homogeneous patient groups.Key words: Congenital cataract surgery, Complications, Intraocular lens
