The investigation of the spatial and physical changes in the historical process of the Konya historic Ahmet Efendi bath house

Because of the uncontrolled rapid urbanization and population growth in the world, many historical cities have been exposed to negative changes. The opening of new motorways caused the destruction of many historical buildings and their environment, and some of them caused to be left to historic buildings fate. There are examples of historical buildings which are in city centers and their real estate values are high due to their location were demolished and replaced by higher-rise buildings in the recent past. Due to this practice, many cities could not adapt to change and lost their original identity. Different from Turkey examples, especially the European cities have been renewed in accordance with the changes and current requirements. Similar to renew of historical center of the cities, new buildings and additions were designed in historical areas where demolished or lost in historical city center. Konya city center was also affected by these changes and lost a significant part of its cultural heritage. The change in the historical process of the urban square, which includes the Aziziye Mosque and the Ahmet Efendi Bath have been evaluated in the thesis. Evaluations have been made regarding the possibilities of the re-functioning of this area, which is very important for the historical city center of Konya. In this thesis, some assessments were made related to restoration and new function proposal of Konya and Turkey with examples of Ahmet Efendi bath. An experimental study was carried out related to new building design in the historical environment and additional structure design to the historical building as a case study, and the results were evaluated with reference to the conceptual background. In the case study, after informing a group of architects and designers about the historical environment and the new building concept, a studio study was carried out, and the products obtained as a result of the studio work were evaluated. In this evaluation, it is observed that neutral applications are preferred more while designing new buildings for the historical environment, and imitation applications are not preferred. In the experimental studio study, it was observed from the results of studio works that the new function of historical building change in the single structure and also sometimes whole city center. As a result of the study, evaluations were made regarding how historical city centers should be conserveded, in particular for Konya Ahmet Efendi Bath and its surroundings, and the design of new buildings and additional buildings in the historical environment.
