The effect of the nursing interventions on meeting learning needs, perception of recovery, coping-adaptation and quality of life in the patients with coronary artery bypass graft

Aim: The aims of this study are to test the validity and reliability of Coping and Adaptation Process Scale (CAPS) in Turkey, to determine the stressors of patients who had coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) before discharge, to examine the effect of nursing care based on Roy's Adaptation Model on learning needs, meeting of learning needs, perception of recovery, coping-adaptation and quality of life. Methods: The research was conducted in three stages. Ethical commitee approval was recieved and written permission was obtained from the patients, the hospitals and the owner of the scales. In the methodological stage of the study; CAPS was adapted to Turkish with 235 patient samples. In qualitative stage, data were collected with "in-depth interview" technique from 16 patients (9 male, 7 female) in the 5th-7th days after CABG and were evaluated with "content analysis". In quasi-experimental stage, the study was conducted with 80 patients including 40 experimental, 40 control patients. In the collection of data, the first measurements were done before and after surgery, then repeated measurements were done at first and third month after surgery. Resuls: It was found that Turkish version of CAPS is a valid and reliable measuring tool in terms of psycholinguistic and psychometric properties. CABG was the focal stimuli to determine the stressors of patients undergoing CABG in discharge. The subthemes including contextual stimuli were learning needs, perception of death, alteration, anxiety, fear, anger, uncertainty perception of recovery and social support. In quasi-experimental third stage of the study, the highest learning needs in intervention and control groups was found in the "activities of living" subscale. It was determined that learning needs and meeting of learning needs, perception of recovery, coping-adaptation, quality of life levels were significantly higher in the intervention group who received the nursing care according to Roy's Adaptation Model than the control group (p<.00). Conclusion: It was observed that CAPS is a valid and reliable measure tool in Turkey, and the nursing interventions based on Roy's Adaptation Model increased the levels of learnig needs, meeting of learning needs, perception of recovery, coping-adaptation and quality of life in patients with coronary artery bypass graft.
