Abstract (EN)
This master's thesis examines Kosovo's traditional costumes, the clothing of different ethnic groups, and their cultural influences. Located in the heart of the Balkans, Kosovo is a region rich in cultural diversity, having hosted the interactions of many different nations throughout history. Bearing traces of major civilizations such as the Ottoman, Roman, and Byzantine empires, these lands present a vibrant cultural mosaic, where Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Bosniaks, Roma, and Gorani live together. Beyond their aesthetic appearance, traditional costumes embody historical and social symbolic meanings. Kosovo's traditional garments are significant cultural elements that reflect the identities of various ethnic groups while also carrying the marks of shared life. The aim of this study is to analyze Kosovo's traditional costumes in conjunction with the cultural influences of the ethnic groups living in Kosovo, revealing not only the aesthetic aspects of these garments but also their historical meanings and social values. In the thesis, traditional costumes as cultural elements were evaluated in detail through examples from six different communities living in Kosovo: Albanians, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Gorani. Fabrics, motifs, and colors used in traditional costumes were examined, identifying how these elements impact social identity and reflect both the commonalities and differences arising from cultural interactions. It was found that, in the post-war period, many traditional garments were destroyed or could not be preserved. The study concludes that traditional costumes, as visual cultural elements, play an important role in social peace and coexistence, especially in regions with high cultural diversity. Therefore, it is necessary to document these costumes to ensure their transmission to future generations.
