Conceptualization of the experiences of women undergoing cosmetic gynecological procedures: A grounded theory study

Objective: This study aims to examine the factors shaping women's perceptions of their genital self-image and to develop a theoretical framework that explains the key concepts and processes directing them toward cosmetic gynecological procedures. Method: The research was conducted using the qualitative grounded theory approach. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with twenty-three participants using a Personal Information Form and a Semi-Structured Interview Guide. In the data analysis phase, the coding stages defined by Strauss and Corbin—open coding, axial coding, and selective coding—were applied. The research process followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Results: The theoretical model developed in this study was titled "The New Me Through Aesthetic Touches." Findings were categorized under four main themes and twelve subthemes. The theme Motivational Dynamics in the Decision-Making Process included changes in genital self-image through lived experiences, and the reflection of these changes on women's social and sexual lives. The theme The Responsibility Map of Sexuality comprised mutual desire and pleasure in sexual relations, the influence of societal and cultural norms, and the pursuit of cosmetic interventions as a means of body control. The theme Balancing Health, Aesthetics, and Relationships in the Solution Process included the search for information and solutions, clarification of medical and aesthetic reasons, and reactions from the social environment. The final theme, The Process of Reconstruction, included the transition from pain to happiness, psychological healing and empowerment, and transformations in sexual life. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that women pursue cosmetic gynecological procedures not merely for physical alterations but also for identity renewal and emotional well-being.
