Abstract (EN)

Coastal structures and anchored vessels can be damaged by the effect of waves. In order to minimize these damages, long embankments called breakwaters are built to form a calm water level. The breakwaters absorb the energy of the wave before it reaches the shore, therefore reducing the wave height on the shore. However, in the trunk and head sections of these structures, scour and deposition can occur with the effect of waves and currents. And as a result of the scour, stability problems and damages, to the point of collapsing, can be seen. For this reason, it is very important to examine the scour that occurs around the breakwater. Although there are existing studies on the head section for non-breaking waves, no experimental study examines the local scour under the effect of breaking waves. Therefore, this thesis aims to eliminate this deficiency in the literature and to examine the local scour that may cause stability losses in the breakwater for the breaking wave case. In this study, the local scour in the head section of a rubble mound breakwater under the effect of the breaking waves was experimentally investigated. The experiments were carried out for two different bed materials (0.23 mm and 0.55 mm) and five different regular waves (1.7 s, 2.0 s, 2.3 s, 2.7 s, 3.1 s). In this thesis, the breaking and non-breaking wave cases were compared and as a result, it was concluded that the scour significantly reduced for the breaking case. In the experiments carried out under the breaking wave conditions, no significant local scour was observed in either bed material conditions.
