Abstract (EN)

Aim: Although existance of oxidative stress described in chronic viral hepatitis B and C there is no study conducted about existence of oxidative stress in patients with chronic hepatitis D. In this study we aimed to investigate oxidative stress in chronic hepatitis D. Matherial Methods: 51 male and 40 female a total of 91 patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis D (mean age was 42.2±11.7) and 22 male and 18 female a total of 40 healty volunters (mean age 39.8±6.09) were included the study. Patients were divided in to a chirrotic (n=30) and a non chirrotic (n=61) groups. Serum samples were obtained from patients and controls and total oxidant stress (TOS), total antioxidant stress (TAS) and oxidant stress index (OSI) levels was compared with each other. Results: Total oxidant stress (TOS) was found significantly elevated in patients in comparison with controls (p<0.001). Total oxidant stress (TOS) was significantly higher in patients with chirrosis than non chirrotics (p<0.006). Total antioxidant stress (TAS) was found significantly lower in controls (p<0.003). Oxidant stress index (OSI) was significantly higher in patients group (p<0.001). Oxidant stress index (OSI) was elevated in chirrotic patients than non chirrotics (p<0.05) Oxidative stress parameters was not significantly different between patients are given interferon treatment and not given interferon treatment in the patients group (respectively for TAS, TOS, OSİ p=0.676, p=0.714, p=0.937). Discussion: Elevated levels of total oxidant stress (TOS) and lower levels of total antioxidant stress (TAS) implicated the existence of prominent oxidative stress in patients group. Total oxidant stress (TOS) was elevated in chirrotic patients. Total antioxidant stress (TAS) was not different between chirrotic and non chirrotic patients. These findings suggest that oxitadive stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis D. Conclusion: Current treatment options for chronic hepatitis D are limited to achieve successfull therapy than other chronic viral hepatitises and there is no alternative therapy in the case of interferon contrendication. Conduction of new studies suggesting of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis D ,may led to alternative therapy options. Key Words: Hepatitis, hepatitis D virus (HDV), oxidative stres, total oxidant stres, total antioxidant stres
