Abstract (EN)
Back ground: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two major health conditions that affect a significant portion of the global population, both associated with high morbidity and mortality. In Turkey, the prevalence of these diseases is increasing and can lead to work force and functional loss, limb amputation, and even mortality. Objective and Methods: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and peripheral arterial disease are two increasingly common diseases in today's world. Triggers such as tobacco smoke, poor living conditions, and inflammation can lead to the development of both diseases and worse their prognosis. Both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods are available for PAD. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the severity of peripheral arterial disease and the FEV1/FVC ratio in patients with COPD who presented to Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, and to determine whether the severity of PAD can be predicted non-invasively in patients with severe COPD. A total of 90 patients were included in the study. All patients underwent peripheral angiography and pulmonary function testing. Based on the Trans Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) classification, patients were divided in to two groups: those with mild peripheral artery disease and those with severe peripheral artery disease, and the groups were compared. The analysis demonstrated a significant association between decreased FEV1/FVC ratio and higher TASC scores (p<0.001). Based on these findings, it is concluded that patients with COPD should be evaluated more carefully for the presence of systemic vascular diseases.
