Abstract (EN)

In this study, short film and Ahmet Uluçay's cinema are considered as a whole. The main aim of the study is to examine Ahmet Uluçay's filmography of short films in order to find out whether he has established a unique style with his short films. As a sub-objective, it is aimed to reveal the characteristics of short film as a genre and to present an alternative source to the literature by examining the course of short films in the world and Turkey. In line with these aims, it is planned to show that short film, which is seen as an amateur genre and a warm-up area before the feature film in Turkey, is a unique genre; the director can create his own distinctive film language only with a short film, and to contribute to changing the existing negative perception of short film. As regards, firstly, the definitions of a short film were discussed based on the literature. In the light of these definitions, a definition of a short film covering all the features of a short film was tried to be formulated. Then, the short film was divided into sub-genres and the characteristics of these genres were introduced. Furthermore, the emergence and development of short films worldwide and the course of Turkish short filmmaking are examined. In addition, the way short film is perceived in Turkey, and the reasons for the existing perceptions are tried to be explained. In the following section, the biography of Ahmet Uluçay and the influences of the society in which he lived on the director's style have been examined to understand the language of the film. Then, the director's films are analysed in terms of concepts such as theme, narrative structure, character, time and space through structural narrative analysis. Thereafter, by using the semiotic analysis method, the narrative forms and meaning structures of the films were determined. In this framework, the films were analysed regarding cinematographic elements through scene analysis since these elements constitute the basic building blocks of a film and, at the same time, demonstrate the director's style. Concerning this, features such as framing, camera angles, shooting scales, camera movements, editing, lighting and sound were examined. As a result of these analyses, the basic assumption of the study was investigated by revealing the common features, differences and structures of the films. Accordingly, it is concluded that Uluçay constructed a unique style with his short films. Based on this result, it was found that a director who shoots only short films can create his own style.
