The application on ceramic surfaces with Sgrafitto Technique of figurations that the tiles of Kubadabad Palace

The Kubadabad Palace, which is the subject of this study, is one of the most important cultural heritages from the Anatolian Seljuk period. The palace, which was built by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat in the Beyşehir district of Konya between 1219-1237, consists of twenty-one buildings. The tiles used in the interior wall decorations of this complex consist of the richest examples reflecting the Anatolian Seljuk art world with their interesting painting styles. The classical arabesque patterned tiles unearthed in the palace excavations, where only a few wall remains can be reached today, are octagonal stars and cross-shaped connecting them. In the surface decorations, in addition to writing, animal and human figures, geometric and plant motifs, beings with human heads were also used. Sgraffito technique is one of the most used decoration methods applied to ceramic products. This technique, which has a history almost as old as the art of ceramics, has been used and developed in many parts of the world in parallel with the development of ceramic art. Ceramic paints are used instead of primer in the sgraffito technique, which is still widely used today. In this study, Kubadabad Palace tiles, which reflect the richness of patterns of the Anatolian Seljuk period, were applied to ceramic surfaces with the sgraffito technique. Unlike the tiles of the period, it is aimed to contribute to the aesthetic understanding of today's ceramic art, with 27 works that were revealed as a result of the studies in which white ceramic clay was made by hand shaping or plaster molding methods at 950 oC.
