Abstract (EN)
The distortion in the structure of culture, which was brought on by industrialism that transgressed both boundaries and the framework of economy following the self-development of the concept of culture without external influences, has also impacted the values that constitute both the society and the social values. However, some values have been articulated into economy as a capitalist tool; one of these values is art. Similarly, design, which exists within culture yet which has become institutionalized through the centuries and thus had found its place in literature, comes to light as a concept that incorporates artisanship and art. The newly produced concepts of art and design, their movement within the industrializing culture, and their paths have become the topic of numerous debates in the recent years. In arts, where concepts intertwine with each other, the concepts of design and culture were restructured in line with market conditions. This conceptual chaos has also significantly affected individual needs. The continuous supply of innovation in the face of wants, needs, and desires has produced new lifestyles accompanied by universal and fleeting sentiments. On the other hand, culture is grounded in locality rather than universality. Yet, the global village, where boundaries have dissipated, has lost its perspective and is presented as if it were a linear platform. As such locality too has dissipated and uniformity has began to dominate each feeling, each moment, and each new artwork worldwide. On top of this monotony, the demand born of needs has been obliterated as it was replaced by the concepts of respectability and luxury. Art, which has become commodified, has transformed the financial codes of needs into galleries, auctions, and luxurious celebrity exhibitions, mutating them into industrial tools. The concept of need, now with its humanist substance lost, is in the service of the markets. The difference between the functionality of design objects and the non-functionality of art objects. [Here,] the materials of ceramic, the concept of luxury, and the indicators of the intertwining of these concepts are discussed through these debates and grounded in the non-functionality of art or the functionality of design. Keywords: Culture, Society, Art, Design, Semiology.
