Intercultural communication and space: Sursuru neighborhood as a daily experience

This thesis deals with the relationship between everyday life and space in the context of intercultural intercultural communication. The main question of the study is about how culture is constructed and how the relations between them are established. In order to answer this question, as a result of an empirical intercultural communication, how the symbolic boundaries of identity are determined in the discourse of everyday culture and the discursive situations on these determined boundaries and cultural meanings are investigated. As a result, an ethnographic field study was conducted in Sürsürü district, a multicultural neighborhood where different ethnicities live together, and a qualitative data was tried to be created about communication ethnographies and cultural discourses related to cultural communities. In the field research, in-depth interviews were conducted with 30 people. In addition, observational studies were also carried out. The cultural distinctions formed according to the findings and results of the thesis both determine the intercultural border and form the cultural identity through the cultural characteristics that are adopted and excluded. Intercultural relations play an important role in the formation of identity awareness. Cultural identity does not have a fixed essence, it is an element that develops depending on the intercultural relationship. Identity arises from both the intense formation of cultural differences and the softening and removal of these differences in terms of the distinctions established.
