An analysis of Kurd Mehmed Efendi's work named Sharhu'l-Mukaddimeti'l-Jazariyya from the perspective of the science of qiraat

The poem called al-Mukaddimati'l-Jazariyya, written by Ibn al-Jazari (d. 833/1429), is considered an important work in the field of qiraat and tajweed. The fact that the work in question covers almost all the subjects of the science of tajweed, despite its small volume and that it is easy to memorize because it is written in a verse form, has enabled it to gain great popularity among the students of qiraat and to be considered as a reference source in the field of qiraat. However, the fact that some technical details in the couplets of the poem, as well as the topics briefly expressed here, require explanation, coupled with the desire to present the work to students of qiraat in a language suitable to the conditions of the time and in an understandable way, and the need to determine the locations of the Quranic words indicated in the verses, have paved the way for it to be commented on by many scholars. Thus, a rich commentary tradition was formed on al-Mukaddimati'l-Jazariyya. Due to the great impact that Ibn al-Jazari had on the Ottoman scientific tradition in the field of qiraat, traces of the commentary tradition are clearly visible in various regions of the Islamic geography, especially in Anatolia. One of the works that emerge as a manifestation of this rich tradition is the commentary titled Sharhu'l-Mukaddimati'l-Jazariyya, written by Kurd Mehmed Efendi (d. 996/1588). In this study, this work, which is one of the Turkish commentaries of al-Mukaddimati'l-Jazariyya, will be analyzed from the perspective of the science of qiraat and its place and importance in this science will be discussed. In this context, the life and works of the author of the work, Kurd Mehmed Efendi, are briefly mentioned, and the research focuses on Sharhu'l-Mukaddimati'l-Jazariyya. Accordingly, Kurd Mehmed Efendi adopted the method of explaining each couplet in his work in turn, and within this framework, he explained the words used in each couplet, analyzed the couplets from the perspective of grammatical structure and provided commentary on them.
