The major effects of globalization on the changing process of SMEs and a sample implementation on the SMEs in the electricity industry in Istanbul

In this study, the effects of opportunities and threats (Intensity of Competition, Cost Pressure, Technological Change, New Opportunities) introduced by globalization, one of the environmental factors for enterprises, on enterprises? organizational structures (Formalization, Specialization, Simplification, Centralization), and operational (Quality, Cost, Flexibility, Delivery Speed) and overall performances (Profitability and Market Performance) are analyzed through a survey using questionnaire technique. In other words, finding the answer to the question of ?What type of organizational structure and operational performance processes would have positive effects on enterprises? overall performances against globalization?? is aimed.A model representing the relations between the above mentioned concepts was formed through literature scan. After the relations in this model had been hypothesized, the field research into the SMEs in the electricity industry in Istanbul was carried out. The questionnaire was given to 110 companies including volunteers, and using the records of Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and Industry.Analysis of the data obtained through the questionnaire have delivered a great number findings showing that factors such as globalization, organizational structures, and operational performance have many effects on enterprises? overall performances. The accuracy level of the survey is high, and the results of regression analysis support the literature. Managers and researches are given recommendations basing on the statistical data obtained, and the results scrutinized.
