Social position of levantines: İzmir sample

European foreigners who primarily came to İzmir with commercial purposes during Ottoman period, became consistent in the region by settling in the city. These people described as Levantines as of XIX. century reached an important position which affects İzmir's commercial, cultural, economical, social and political life over time. İt is seen that the formation process of cultural structure of Levantines who have various distinct properties is the result of a Europe-centred discription. These people who have a privileged position during Ottoman period helped İzmir's change, transformation and the increase in the city's visibility in the world. Levantines having significant effects so far are also one of the important figures of today's İzmir. Before the subject of social position of Levantines was analysed, the notions identity, minority and isolation were studied theoretically in order to form the infrastructure of the subject. In addition to this, what the term Levantine stands for, who the Levantines are what properties Levantine identity form around and what the social and political position Levantines as well as are the subjects such as Levantine's importance for İzmir are mentioned and this analysis form the main aim of this study. Today's Levantines who are thoughted not to be satisfactorily examined in the literature were tried to analyse by the help of the questions to them within the framework of face to face conversations and what the social position of Levantines are were tried to be discovered.
