The relationship between the academic procrastination behaviours and decision making styles of high school students

With this research, it is aimed to research whether 10, 11 and 12th grade highschool students' academic procrastination behaviors are to be predicted or not by the decision-making styles. The parameters have been collected with the method of categorical sampling from the 3 of the general high schools and 3 of the Anatolian high schools which are in Şahinbey and Şehitkamil in Gaziantep and with the method of random group sampling from the 2 classes of each school. 408 students from 10, 11 and 12th grades of high schools have joined this research. With the tools of collecting parameters, `Academic Procrastination Questionnaire? which is developed by Çakıcı (2003), the `Decision Making Inventory? which is developed by Scott and Bruce (1995) and translated into Turkish by Taşdelen (2002) are used. `Personal Information Form? which is developed by the researcher is used to get information about demographic characteristics of the students. Multiple regression analysis, arithmetic average, percentage scatter, independent samples t-test, One way ANOVA are applied in analysing of parameters. In the result of searching analysis of parameters, avoidant decision making and instant decision making variables explain approximately %19 of the variance in academic procrastination score. Analyzing the results of t-test for significance of regression coefficients, it is determined that avoidant decision making and instant decision making appears to be significant predictions on academic procrastination. Intuitive decision making, rational decision making and dependent decision-making variables haven?t significant effects. It is determined that the students? academic procrastination behaviors are effected from their genders significantly while their parents? educational level, education field and the level of the class don?t effect this. Findings are discussed with literature meters. And with these findings, some suggestions are developed. Key words: Academic procrastination, decision making styles.
