The effect of high school students' individual innovativeness and problem solving competencies on attitudes towards coding

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the effects of high school students' individual innovativeness and problem solving competencies on their attitudes towards coding were examined. In the research, descriptive and relational survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The research includes students who have received coding training before studying in different high schools and different classes in Tokat province in 2022, selected according to the criterion sampling method. Within the scope of the research, 752 secondary school students were reached. In the study, data were collected with the individual innovativeness scale, the problem solving skill scale developed by the researcher, and the attitude scale towards coding. In the data analysis process, the data that were found to be inconsistent or with missing answers were excluded from the analysis, and analyzes were made on the remaining 587 person dataset. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics such as percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were used. It has been determined that problem solving skills are more important than individual innovativeness on the attitude towards coding. According to the research findings, it was concluded that high school students were generally moderately innovative, students were mostly in the "Inquisitive" category in terms of innovativeness categories, and their problem-solving skills and attitudes towards coding were at a moderate level. Attitudes towards coding of high school students participating in the study did not differ significantly according to gender, grade level and school type variables. However, in general, male students compared to female students; it has been determined that the students in the 12th grade have higher attitudes towards coding than the students in other classes, and the students in the science high school are higher than the students in other types of high schools. In addition, it has been observed that as high school students' individual innovativeness and problem solving skills increase, their attitudes towards coding also increase. It has been observed that students' individual innovativeness levels and problem solving skills have a moderate, positive and significant effect on their attitudes towards coding. It has been concluded that students in science high schools have higher individual innovativeness, problem solving skills and attitudes towards coding compared to other types of high schools.
