Self perception and anxiety levels of high school students

The aim of the research is to analyse the relationship between self-perception's some dimensions and trait anxiety levels of high school students. It was also examined if the some dimensions of self-perception (scholastic competence, social acceptance, physical appearance ) differ significantly inrespect of school type, gender, number of siblings, social-economic standard, perceived parental attitudes. The research was carried out in 2014-2015 academic year on 1379 students (690 female, 689 male) that were chosen randomly among the 9th, 10th and 11th grade students of 5 different high schools affiliated to Kocaeli Gölcük District Education Directorate. In this study, Personal Information Sheet, Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used for data collection. The data of this research were analysed with the statistics package program of SPSS for Windows 21.0. The results of the study indicated that, there were significant, positive,weak relations between self-perception sub-scales and trait anxiety. The findings of the study showed that there were significant differences in mean scores of scholastic competence, social acceptance, physical appearance subdimensions of self-perception with respect to school type,social-economic standard, perceived parental attitudes variables,whereas there were no significant differences due to number of siblings variable. Mean scores of scholastic competence subdimension of self-perception does not differ according to gender variable, meanwhile social acceptance and physical apperance subdimensions differs significantly according to gender variable.
