Analysis of the association of LMP2 and LMP7 genes with obesity

Abstract (EN)

Obesity is a situation resulting from excess body fat accumulation and increasing the risk of the dieases such as cardiovascular disorders, type 2 diabetes and cancer. According to the classification done by the World Health Organisation, an individual having body mass index higher than 30 is defined as obese. It is known that as well as environmental factors, genetics also has an effect in the development of obesity. Although many related genes have been reported, the genetic basis of obesity has not been clearly identified yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of LMP2 and LMP7 gene polymorphisms in the development of obesity. LMP2-60 and LMP7-145 polymorphisms were analysed by PCR-RFLP technique in 100 morbid obese patient and 100 control individuals having normal body mass index. The allele and genotype frequencies were calculated and compared between morbid obese and the control group. As a result, no statistically significant association was found between LMP2-60 and LMP7-145 polymorphisms and obesity (p>0.05). According to these result, it can be concluded that these genes do not have a role in the development of obesity.
