The examination of alexithymia and anger expression relation with psychiatric comorbidity on prisoners with a history of substance use

Abstract (EN)

In this study; male prisoners whose have a history of substance abuse is purposed to evaluate the relationship alexithymia and anger expressed style between psychiatric comorbidity. Also; it is intended to provide new information on the sample of prison because of examine the relationship between trait anger and anger expressed style with alexithymia due to the absence of studies. The sample of the study was comprised of between the dates of November 2013-January 2014 in İzmir No:2 T Type Closed Prison Agency to carry out the punishment of the criminal justice, volunteers who agreed to participate in the study and 134 prisoner men with a history of substance abuse together with 132 prisoner men with no history of substance abuse. Prisoners who agreed to participate in the study was applies Demographic Form contains demographic information, DSM-IV Dİagnostic Criteria Suitable Prepared Abuse and Addiction Form, Turkish Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Spielberger State trait anger expression Scale by self report and DSM-IV based on structured clinical interview guide for located on the first axis diorders and DSM-III-R based on structured clinical interview guide for personality disorders. The mean age of the 266 male inmates participating in the study was found to be 34-+10.16 and ages ranged from 18-73. Male prisoners of 74.1% (n=197) are smokers, male prisoners of 46.2% (n=123) uses alcohol and male prisoners of 50.4% (n=134) uses substances. When evaluated in terms of whether they were alexithymia, it is appeared to 116 people (43.6%) have alexithymic characteristics and 150 people (56.4%) don't have alexithymic characteristics. Also; 108 people (40.6%) show their anger in the form of continual anger, 63 people (23.7%) show their anger in the form of iner anger thrown, 47 people (17.7%) show thie anger in the form of projected outward anger and 48 people (18%) show thie anger in the form of controlled anger. In addition; prisoners who have or not psychiatric disorders and personality disorders were examined. Male prisoners who have history of substance abuse and no have history of substance abuse viewed the relationship between anger expression to alexithymia, it isn't a significant difference between alexithymia to continious, controlled and extroverted anger expression style; but it is significant difference between alexithymia to internal anger expression style, in male prisoners who have history of substance abuse. And it is a significant difference between alexithymia to each one of them anger expression style in male prisoners who have no history of substance abuse. It is found a significant difference between psychiatric disorders to alcohol use, alcohol abuse, substance abuse and use variable type substances in male prisoners. Also; it is found a significant difference between personality disorders to alcohol use alcohol abuse, substance abuse. It is analyzed the relationship between alexithymia with psychiatric disorders and personalty disorders, it is found a significant difference between both cases. It is analyzed the relationship between anger expression style with psychiatric and personality disorders, it is found significant difference between both cases. In conclusion; it is said that alexithymic symptoms, anger expression Styles, especially anger thrown into the interior and exterior shot, psychiatric disorders and personality disorders is a strong relationship between substance abuse patterns. That's why conducting new studies on this topic, possible to obtain more accurate results. In prisons, there is a need to increase the scientific study to development of intervention programs and to be made more systematic rehabilitation work.
