The implementation of the activities about the subjects in the change and recognition of substance unit as demonstration and group experiment effect to the academic success of the primary fifth grade students

In this study, it is searched that whether the implementation of the activities about the subjects in the Change and Recognition of Substance Unit as demonstration and group experiment effect to the academic success of the primary fifth grade students.This research was made in the first semester of 2008-2009 academic year with 62 students of two fifth grade class in Yavuz Selim Primary School in Polatlı, the district of Ankara. In the beginning of the research, each class had Change and Recognition of Substance Concept Test. The aims of this test are; to determine the level of prior knowledge of the students and to determine whether there is any difference among students in terms of qualities which was tested by this test.In the course of this unit, the class control group in which activities were implemented as demonstration experiment was used as class experiment group in which activities were implemented as grouping. After the course of this unit, each class had Change and Recognition of Substance Concept Test as the last test.The data, obtained after the research, was evaluated using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) program. The hypothesis of this research was tested by ?t? test. The evaluation of the results was made in the 0, 05 level of significance. As a result of this research, it was observed that the success of the students who are in the experiment group in which activities was made as group experiment was higher and statistically more meaningful than the students who are in the control group in which activities was made as demonstration experiment. In addition, the students in the group in which activities was made as group work showed more positive interest to Science and Technology lesson than the students in the control group.Key Words: Group experiment, demonstration experiment, change and recognition of substance, science and technology education.
