Effects of residents on rehabilitation practices in urban conservation areas: Case of Suyabatmaz Neighborhoods of Gaziantep

Increasing emphasis is placed on the protection of cities with historical, natural, cultural values in the globalizing world. With the rapidly increasing population, internal and external migration, high construction, misuse and the effect of modernization, nowadays historical memories are threatened with extinction. Turkey has been host community for the Syrians who have fled their country since 2011 because of the unrest in Syria. Within a short period of intense and unexpected flow of populations from Syria, under the influence of the city; For the Syrians looking for a settlement area in the city, it was seen that one of the priority areas they could access was the residential units located on the historical doorframe. The aim of the study was to determine the potential to affect the future of the new population, especially the city, which was later articulated in the city. Suyabatmaz neighborhood, which is chosen as a sample area, is located in the Şehreküstü district of Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province and is located in the Şehreküstü Konakları project area, which was recently built by Şahinbey Municipality as street improvement and restoration works. In this study, first giving information about the conservation and improvement works performed on the sample area, then the results of the survey with local population and Syrian population, who are residential and commercial users who are selected in the field, were given. In surveys, conservation awareness ; location selection criteria; determinations were given about expectation and satisfaction with living area and about the conservation work carried out in the area and places.
