Abstract (EN)

AIM: Voiding disorder is one of the common chronic problems of childhood. If not treated, it may cause major complications such as recurrent urinary tract infection and consequent renal failure. For this reason, we planned this study to determine the frequency of voiding disorder and to identify the accompanying risk factors in primary and secondary school students aged 6-14 years in Malatya. CASES AND METHOD: The survey questionnaires were distributed to 1200 students aged 6-14 years in randomly selected classes of six schools in Malatya in closed envelopes for filling them out by their parents in May 2016. The questionnaires were collected during subsequent intermittent school visits. Of these questionnaires, 948 were gathered up. After an assessment, a total of 41 questionnaires were excluded, consisting of a history of brain-spinal cord and urology disease, insufficient information and conflicting responses. A total of 907 questionnaires were evaluated. The scale of voiding disorder symptom score (VDSS) developed by Akbal and colleagues was used in our study. The children who scored 8,5 and above on this scale were evaluated as "having a voiding disorder". RESULTS: Of 907 children, 152 (16.8%) had daytime urinary incontinence and 131 (14.5%) had nocturnal enuresis. In our study, a voiding disorder was determined in 175 children (19,3%) who scored 8,5 and above on the voiding disorder symptom score (VDSS) scale. There was a statistically significant relationship between daytime urinary incontinence, nocturnal enuresis, and voiding disorder. It was determined that voiding disorder in children significantly reduced with age. Also, it was identified that gender does not affect the frequency of voiding disorder. Any relationship was not determined between living in urban or rural areas and voiding disorder. It was established that the parents' marital status and educational level did not affect the frequency of voiding disorder. A significant relationship was identified between a positive family history in terms of voiding disorder and nocturnal enuresis, and encopresis. Also, it was determined that the life quality of children diagnosed by voiding disorder was considerably affected. CONCLUSION: As a result of our study, we determined that voiding disorder was a common disorder in school-age children in Malatya. For the recognition and early treatment of voiding disorder, the necessary cooperation should be established with parents and school teachers and administrators. In this way, children could be protected from possible complications that may occur due to voiding disorder. Key words: voiding disorder, school-age children, nocturnal enuresis, lower urinary tract system.
