Frequency of the domestic violence which women aged between 15-49 age in Mardin face with and its effecting factors

Being seen frequently in all societies; Domestic violence against women is an important endemic public health which emerges as reflection of gender inequality to relationships. This study is made to identify frequency of women aged 15-49 in Mardin city who are exposed to domestic violence and their affecting factors.Population of this study was formed by women aged between 15-49 living in Mardin and using the formula n=Nt²(pq)/d²(N-1)t²(pq) 1111 people were chosen for sampling, 1064 of them were reached after repeated visits (answer rate is %95.8). City center and it?s districts were represented in the sampling according to population rate. x² (chi-square) test is used for statistical analyze.Average age of women are 32.55±8.23. %29.4 of them are not literate. %47.5 is married by arranged marriage, %6.5 bride exchange, %1.4 child marriage method. %6.1 of whole has not got civil marriage. Bride wealth was given to families of %30.5, %6.4 has a spouse and %61.8 of who has a spouse lives with her spouse. %14.9 of whole identified theirself as a member of tribe. %7.3 stated that honour crimes were occured in their families. %25.9 was exposed to her father?s and %37.6 her mother?s physical violence in the past. %44.5 has been exposed to physical, %56.4 verbal/emotional, %37.7 economical and % 14.8 sexual violence at least once during her lifetime. Still, %13.2 is being exposed to physical, %15.8 to verbal/emotional and %7.3 to sexual violence. Their exposure to violence is raised when the rate of womans? and their husbands? educational level, socioeconomic level and monthly qouta per capita decrease(p<0.05). Factors such as bride exchange, bride wealth, honour crimes, exposing to violence during childhood and husband?s habits like gamble and alcohol raise the rate of exposure to violence (p<0.05).As a result; domestic violence against women in Mardin city is meaningly high. Regarding region?s socioeconomical and cultural conditions, there must be some legal and social adjustments made in cooperation with non-govermantal organizations and press organizations.Keywords: Mardin, Woman, Domestic Violence
