Abstract (EN)

In July 2008, a joint project, named TAMAM (Turkish American Marmara Multi Channel), between Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology and Columbia University, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Institute has been realized in Marmara Sea. High resolution multi-channel seismic reflection data have been collected during the Project onboard of R/V K. Piri Reis research vessel. The data comprise whole Marmara Sea and were collected to obtain new insights on the evolution and stratigraphic structure of the Marmara Sea. In this study, the seismic data from Mid Marmara Ridge and Kumburgaz Basin have been used. The seismic data were processed by using standard seismic data processing stages. In order to define the shallow gas accumulations, some additional analyses such as instantaneous seismic attribute calculations have been performed. It is interpreted from instantaneous attribute analyses that a low frequency zone just below the high amplitude reflections with reverse polarity may indicate a shallow gas accumulation on the seismic data. These anomaly zones have been mapped on the seismic lines and a possible shallow gas accumulation map was revealed. It is observed that shallow gas accumulations have been concentrated on the Mid Marmara Ridge and along the southern shelf area in the central Marmara Sea.
