The effect of mathematical modeling activities on statistical literacy levels of 8th grade students

This research examines the effects of mathematical modeling activities on the statistical literacy levels of 8th grade students at a public school. This mixed methods research included 65 8th grade students over an 8-week period during the academic year 2021-2022. Quantitative data of the study were collected through Statistical Literacy Pre-Test and Post-Test, Modeling Activities. Qualitative data of the study were collected through semi-structured interview forms and clinical interviews. The data were analyzed with Independent Groups T-Test, Dependent Groups T-Test, Mann Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon Test. The findings show modeling activities in the experimental group made a significant impact on the statistical literacy levels of the students both in general and in terms of components. Students expressed positive opinions about the implementation of modeling activities. While the experimental group achieved a statistical literacy levels of 2, 3,and partial 4 out of 6, the control group students reached Levels 1 and 2.
