The effect of mathematics teaching supported with material on (secondary school) 6th student success, attitude, concern and permanency of learning

The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of mathematics teaching supported by material on (secondary school) 6th success, attitudes and concerns. In the study, the effect of practices carried on the student success level, of achievements on permanence level and the situations of the students manner and concern . As an quasi- experimental type, this study is conducted in 2013-2014 educational year, in Elazığ, Kuyulu Secondary School. The study group is made of 60 students in this school. In addition, the study group selected for pilot study of set subject test is made of 158 students who are in the 7th grade, in the center of Elazığ. In the study, while the subject of set is taught by using worksheets and materials improved in accordance with acquirements in experimental group, it is taught with normal teaching in control group. Before starting study, all tests which are set success test, mathematics attitude scale, mathematics concern scale were performed again in the end of the study. Besides, eight weeks after finishing the study, the set success test has been fulfilled again with the aim of analyzing the influence of success on permanence level. Furthermore, the views of students have been obtained by using student feedback form which is prepared according to expert opinion so as to get the views of students about teaching based on worksheets and materials which are filled in by the students. In the results which are attained from analyzing the data, at the end of the practices carried, there have been considerable differences between pretest and posttest in the study and control group. It is seemed that there is an increase in success in both groups. However, when the groups are compared, it is made out that learning in experimental group is so much higher than learning in control group. Moreover, it is understood that lessons which are taught with materials affect remembering more positively. When the points of the posttest of both groups are compared, a meaningful difference is obtained in favor of the experimental group. Therefore, the set subject taught with materials affects mathematics attitudes of the students positively. According to the findings obtained from this study, it is concluded that the concern level of the students in experimental group has reduced.
