Representation of history in media: Examples of "Muhteşem Yuzyil" and "Payitaht Abdulhamid"

The purpose of this thesis, which deals with the historical series broadcasted on television,to reveal the new representations of media by constructing historical facts. Theoretical investigations of media, culture, reality, ideology and concept of figure was conducted and the relationship between media and history was examined. In order to create the sample of this study; the series "Muhtesem Yuzyil", consisting of 139 episodes and 4 seasons, and the series "Payitaht Abdulhamid" consisting of 19 episodes in the first season were watched. In this study, comparisons were made between historical facts and historical figures, sultans of the period, female characters and clothing themes in the series based on. In this thesis, textual analysis was conducted using qualitative content analysis, it has been determined that the media reconstructs historical realities according to their economic and ideological interests and creates new representations. Historical people, facts and events in the series were fictionalized according to the needs of the television world and in addition, it was seen that he was distant from his reality.
