?Tavern? in Turkey in the context of the relationship between the space and music

Abstract (EN)

This research is a popular music study where ethnographic implements collected via field work are being subjected to a theoretical analysis. Hence, the first chapter, as the methodological requires, is being devoted to a theoretical discussion. In the second chapter, there is placed a brief history of Turkey?s entertainment venues as a ?space of representation?. In the first section of third chapter, built and contextualized a relation between the theoretical discussion which has been drawn in detail at the first chapter and the tavern in focus is established. In the second section of the third chapter, the writing methods of the resources regarding to the history of Turkish popular music is being skimmed through and the last part of the chapter the descriptions of tavern is taken place within the gazino analysis which later helps to make a mild arise to the case study.Within this context, tavern is being analyzed over space, music, musician and audience/customer. With the outcomes of the interviews made with musicians, customers, staff and business managers are colligated to the spatial observations acquired in those places and are discussed theoritically. In this study all the entertainment venues that had been constructed through music and specifically speaking tavern is contextualized as a ?space of representation?. The music of tavern is a genre which has emerged in urban spaces where there is a relics of entertainment (İstanbul and other big cities in Turkey) that renders visible the continuity and transformations of these spaces (urban) by using its subspaces (tavern) in a specific period (80s). Withal, the characteristic of musical performances (style, repertoire, instrumentation etc.) has constructed these among others distinguishingly as a ?social practice? and the ?representation power? of those very places enabled tavern to be developed and maturated as a popular music. Tavern music is -standing on either properly named by music industry or its locations as continuity where once the Greek Tavern remained traces; a music that has an eclectic repertoire, performed by a single man playing keyboard and singing along as a vocal pianist (piyanist şantör).
