Evaluating the word groups in Memduh Şevket Esendal's stories with regard to teaching Turkish

?Word Groups? are the leading subject for elementary and secondary students which they have most difficulty in grammar and which is almost a syndrome for them. Students have difficulty in comprehending, bearing in mind and decomposing this subject which is divided into many subcategories and which takes nearly one month to teach. In this study, word groups in twelve stories that takes place in the original edition of Memduh Sevket Esendal?s short story book ?Mendil Altında? (which is published in 1925) are analyzed. The stories are Mendil Altında, htiyarlık, Karga Yavrusu, Ana Baba, Hasta, Feminist, Keles, Rüya Nasıl Çıktı, Hayat Ne Tatlı, Kaçırdık mı, Gül Hanımın Annesi, Müdürün Zügürdü. The analyzed word groups are noun phrases, adjective phrases, verbals, prepositional phrases, repatatives and reputation phrases. The noun phrases are studied under the headings of possessive construction, indeterminate genitival constructions and continuous construction. In the possessive constructions there are some subcategories such as ?taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun? , ?not taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun? , ?having no modifier? , ?ones whose modifier take ablatif ? , ?ones having no modifying affix?. In the unqualified noun phrases, there is a classification such as ?taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun? and ?not taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun?. In the chaining noun phrases the three headings are ?taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun? , ?not taking words or word groups between modifier and modified noun? and ?the phrases in which ablatif is used as modifying affix. The adjective phrases are studied under the headings of descriptive, demonstrative, and made with verbals. After that demonstrative adjectives are divided into headings of numerical, demonstrative, indefinite, and questional adjectives; and demonstrative adjectives are divided into headings of ordinal number, cardinal number, fraction number and distrubite number adjectives. There is also a classification in the demonstrative adjectives such as ?phrases made with demonstrative adjectives? and ?made with -ki affix forming adjective?. Verbids are analyzed under these three headings: infinitives, participles and adverbials. Doublet groups are analyzed under the headings of ?repetition of the same word? , ?made with words having similar meaning? ,? made with opposites? , ? made with combined words in terms of meaning? and ?made with one meaningful-one meaningless words?. Prepositional groups are divided into two groups: One of them is ?the ones whose noun is one word?, and the other is ?the ones whose noun is a word group?. Reputation groups take place at the end of the study. In this study, word groups in all the headings are arranged according to the order in the story and it is written in bold type in the sentence. Also, the name of the story, page number and line number are given in a parenthesis at the end of the sentence. The analyzed stories and other stories in the book take place in the appendix part.
