Evaluation of nutritional status in patients at the beginning ofbreast cancer and chemotherapy treatment

Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted with 42 patients (case group) aged 18 years and older who applied to Uludağ University Research Hospital Oncology Department to evaluate the nutritional status of breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment and 42 patients (patient group) who applied to the internal diseases department of the same hospital as acute disease, but each patient had an acute illness. It was carried out on 42 volunteers (control group) without any chronic disease. A questionnaire form developed for the study. Also adult semi-quantitative nutrition consume rate form was used in intervivew. These forms are applied on all the individuals taken into the scope of the study by the researcher through face-to-face interview method. Nutritional status and anthropometric measurements of all individuals belonging to the study groups were taken and necessary calculations were made according to these data. Frequency of food consumption, cooking methods, types and amounts of oil used were determined. It was found that BMI, height, waist circumference, and middle circumference of the upper arm were significantly higher in the case group compared to the control group (p<0.05). The frequency of consumption of buttermilk, fruits, walnuts etc., white bread, fatty bread, olive oil was found to be significantly higher in the case group than in the control group (p< 0.05). On the otherhand chicken meat, fish, pasta, etc., coffee was found to be significantly higher in the control group than in the case group (p< 0.05). In terms of biochemical parameters examined in the study, hemoglobin and vitamin D values of individuals at Hg were significantly lower than the control, and total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, total cholesterol/HDL ratio, SGOT, SGPT, total protein, ferritin, folic acid, t3 values were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05).
