Abstract (EN)

Investigation of Some Biochemical Parameters in Patients with Depression at Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital Aim: Recent studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between depressive disorders and certain blood parameters such as vitamin D, iron and thyroid hormones deficiencies. However a relationship between these parameters and severity of depression. In this study we aimed to investigate the relationship between severity of depressive disorder an such blood parameters. Method: 3985 patients who diagnosed with depression at Mengücek Gazi Education and Research Hospital in 2013–2017, were included in this study. For the aim of the study, the measurements of vitamin D, iron, and thyroid hormones in these patients were reviewed from patient records in the hospital registry. The relationship between the diagnosis and biochemical measurement results, the relationship between these results and the age and sex of the patients, and the age and gender of the patients were statistically analyzed. Findings: When the obtained data were analyzed by appropriate statistical methods, no statistically significant correlation was found between the diagnosis and biochemical measurement results. When the findings were evaluated, the level of vitamin D was significantly lower in both sexes (about 13 ng / ml). According to these findings; There was a weak negative correlation between age and iron level (r = -0.094) and a weak correlation between gender and iron level (r = 0.072, r = 0.222). There was also a negative correlation between age-free T3 level (r = -0.348) and a weak relationship between sex-free T3 level (r = 0.245). In addition, there was a negative correlation between age-free T4 level (r = -0.069) and a weak relationship between sex-free T4 level and gender-diagnosis (r = 0.123, r = 0.036). Finally, there was a negative weak correlation between age-TSH level and gender-TSH level (r = -0.103, r = -0.109). Conclusion: Although the relationship between the severity of depression and the levels of vitamin D, iron and thyroid hormones was not found in this study, different studies proved the existence of this relationship. When the patient group with this diagnosis is taken into account, it is significant that the level of vitamin D is obviously low. Patients who constituted our sample were divided into three groups according to ICD-10 severity classification: mild, moderate and severe. However, the number of data in the patient groups subject to this classification is not evenly distributed limits the statistical evaluation. For this reason, we believe that it would be more useful to investigate the relationship with these biochemical parameters in larger populations in order to achieve higher success in the diagnosis and treatment of depression.
