Choices from Fetâvâ-yı Ali Efendi by Seyyid Abdülgafûr the Mufti of Merzifon and their evaluation

The manuscript of Fetâvâ-yı Ali Efendi was studied in our thesis. The manuscript is in Amasya Beyazıt Manuscript Library. 881 fatwas between pages 2a-56b of the manuscript have been latinized. The definition of fatwa was given in the first chapter on study. Subsequently, the functioning of the fatwa in the periods of the Prophet (PBUH), companions, successors, mujtahid imams and the Ottoman Empire were explained. The life, education and duties of author Çatalcalı Ali Efendi (d. 1103/1692) were mentioned, information about her Fetâvâ was shared. In the second chapter, the political, economic and social situation of Amasya and Merzifon in the 18th century were explained. The manifestation of the beliefs, social and cultural conditions of the people living in these regions in the selections made by the copyist Seyyid Abdülgafûr from Fetâvâ-yı Ali Efendi has been emphasized. The reasons why some of the fatwas in the original manuscript were preferred are explained together with the fatwa examples. The questions and answers of 881 fatwas between the pages 2a-56b of the journal was given in tables with their examples. The latinized text of 881 fatwas, the distribution of the number of fatwas to the chapters, sample texts and the image of incorrect processing of library records were added at the end of the study.
